Branching out...

Oh these interesting branch art has my preschool teacher's heart in a pitter-patter!! This would give an organic touch to a kid's book case or I can even see it adorning a coffee table in a beach house. Hmmmm, I might just do something like this with mini-sassy with the fallen branches of our fallen favorite tree!

Obsessed with the 1920's....

I found myself squatting in my Havaianas by the garbage can in the middle of the night last weekend. I was hysterically sifting through rotten food and used tissues for a pea-sized scarab from my grandmother's 1920's bracelet. I had coerced  bribed enlisted mini-sassy and my cousin Maisha to help me.To distract ourselves from the stench and general yukkiness of our task, we spoke about 1920's fashion. And by WE, I mean ME. Just so you get a sense of the scene, this is how I was yammering without pause :
" I  would be SO happy to just wear clothes like I walked out of  the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald. So feminine and floaty and alluring....... My grandmother had a closet-full of party dresses from the 20's ( she was quite the flapper)....... As a little girl, I would secretly examine each and every bugle-beaded dress!!! OHMYLORDTHESHOES! Bejewelled, kitten-heeled suede little things! Speaking of the 1920's, have you seen Marguerite Duras' "The Lover" ? The Fedora that launched a thousand obsessions!"
Yes! I was blabbing on and on in this disjointed nervous fashion, full of non-sequitors and histrionic sniffling  ...but  inside I kept thinking: It's only a THING.. it's only a THING....it's only a THING. Maisha and mini-sassy wisely kept their mouths shut- to avoid inhaling the smells and the fruit flies.
St. Anthony or maybe it was John Locke of LOST once said: "When you stop searching, you find what you are looking for".  And so it was with me. Wrapped in the last wet paper towel of the trash heap, the very second  I  accepted that I had lost the scarab forever, there it was...
I would have cried from  gratitude but I was too busy trying to spit out a family of fruit flies!

My least favorite chore....

I send forth my family into the world in crumpled clothes daily.
Don't get me wrong, I love the feel and look of a crisply ironed shirt as much as the next girl , but I have no patience for doing it myself. The reason I bring this up is I've unpacked all our bags from our trip and am faced with a mountain of clean but very, very, very crumpled clothes. So here I am, sitting dejectedly in front of this overwhelming pile, thinking : should I chuck the lot? Donate to salvation army? Hide it and convince J we lost the luggage bearing all his favorite shirts..... What's a girl to do?!
Do you have a super-duper detested chore?

Harry and me.....

I'm doing it! I've been dragging this hefty last book of Harry Potter to 3 continents and parked it on several bedside tables, but I could never get myself to read it.
I don't even know why I've been so sentimental about it !!!
I really didn't want to say goodbye to Harry, Hermione, Hagrid and whole gang at Hogwarts....

But, I think the time has come.....

I wish I had Butter Beer and Bertie Bott's Every Flavored Beans right about now...

Thinking Green...

My father is a green thumb. He just harvested the sweetest, juiciest tomatoes you'll ever taste this side of the equator. His father before him cultivated roses as big as your palm! I'm sure his grandfather and great-grandfather had a strong connection to the land, as well.

I have grown up with romantic notions of vegetable patches and flower gardens and I love all things horticultural but sadly, I have not inherited an iota of the botanically-friendly genes.

I can annihilate plants with just one look.

But I have been longing for an indoor fig tree , like the third picture above.....

So, I called up my Pops to ask for his advice. He says there is no secret to gardening. You just need:

1. Patience- I'm buying a full-grown plant so I can skip this part!haha!
2. Sunshine- Okay, we've got lots of sun in Singapore!
3. Water/ Food- Aha! that's where I get into trouble. I always forget to water the plants and put fertilizer pellets! But never fear! That's why God invented post-its. I shall leave reminders all around the house and we should be okay!

And lastly,

4. Love- My pops has the heart of a poet, so EVERYTHING has to be done with LOVE- from cooking a paella , to dancing, to building a playhouse, to repairing a tractor engine!

But you know what? It reminded me... if everything I did, big and small, I did with LOVE, my life would be SO much fuller and so much more fun!!!

gracias, papa!

" What's-in-the-Fridge?" Dinner Challenge

With the birthday hoopla and the post Peking-duck lunch nap, I forgot to plan for Sunday night dinner. So, it was a case of opening the fridge and cobbling together a respectable meal from the available ingredients in 30 minutes.

Last night, the materials I had to work with were: Mushrooms and Tarragon

So, I decided to make a Mushroom and Tarragon Risotto.
Makes 4 Servings
Preparation and Cooking time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Roughly Chop:
1/2 onion
2 garlic cloves
tarragon 3 tbsp.
Mushrooms- cleaned

4 tbsp. good olive oil
1 and 1/2 cups of rice
1/2 cup of cream
1/2 cup of wine
4 cups of chicken stock ( more as needed)

salt and pepper
Parmesan cheese flakes
Truffle oil** makes any meal restaurant quality!

In a medium sized sauce pan, heat up the olive oil. Add the onions and garlic and rice until everything is well-coated with oil. Pour in the wine. Stir well, and let the alcohol do it's magic to the starch of the rice.

When the rice is translucent, add mushrooms and tarragon. Pour in the stock. Stir constantly. Adjust your flame so it doesn't burn. You may need to add more stock. Taste to see if it needs seasoning and if the rice is cooked. The Heinz chicken stock I use is pretty salty, so I never add salt.

** Risottos need to be stirred, so don't go and watch TV or online now! In cooking school, they taught us to always taste what you are cooking. In this case, taste the rice so you know if it is almost cooked through. I like my rice al dente but my family likes softer risottos. This makes the difference of when you take it off the flame.**

For a softer risotto, remove from flame when rice is cooked through, pour in the cream and stir thoroughly.
Serve up in individual bowls.
Drizzle a bit of Truffle oil, sprinkle some Parmesan and you are ready to go!

I have made this recipe with asparagus, as well. Yummy!

Happiness on a Saturday Afternoon ...

I have this picture tacked on my cork board by my desk. It makes me think of my pop's old farmhouse. It reminds me that perfection does not equal comfort and that expensive stuff do not equal happiness. I know for a fact that one can be so very happy drinking lemonade from old jam jars , sitting amidst mismatched pillows on a settee with peeling paint.

It's a Saturday afternoon and J, mini-sassy, Hugo and I are all wedged into a white sofa. There are plates of piping-hot homemade Truffle and Asparagus risotto strewn all about (Saturday is meatless day in our house). The furniture doesn't match and there's a pile of breakfast dishes in the sink... but I'm as comfy cozy as can be!

Hope you are having a comfy cozy Saturday too!

A Perfume Review: Escentric Molecule 01

Okay, so you may not know this about me but I cyberstalk/ diligently seek out articles about my favorite fashion inspirations...
A few months back, I came across an interview of the ever-fabulous Giovanna Battaglia wherein she revealed that the perfume she uses is called Escentric Molecules  and it's from a little  German perfume company. What's that? I had never heard of it. I'm usually  a Jo Malone/ Miller Harris kinda girl..... but goshdarnit! if I can't have Gio's body/wardrobe/style, I can have her scent! So after  hours of extensive research and numerous futile phone calls around Singapore, I buckled down and ordered some samples from http://www.luckyscent.com/ .
While most perfumes have an armlong list of ingredients, Escentric Molecules is 65% made of  ISO E SUPER. This is  the usual synthetic base component of most perfumes, but Escentric molecule 01 has it in the highest concentration.
The  bottomline on write-ups of this perfume is , and to paraphrase Giovanna Battaglia's comments, Escentric Molecules is  like wearing a pheromone. People want to sit closer to you, guys go wild, girls stop you in the street to ask what perfume you are wearing, etc etc. So, I had high expectations
Now,  some people say it smells chemically, some people talk about  a woodsy sillage  and  a fresh basenote.... I can't really tell you if I agree or disagree with whatever has been said because I can't smell the darned thing! It is the emperor's new clothes of perfume to me! So,  I'll just have to tell you  how the people around me experienced it. Consider this:
Normally, when I walk past J after spritzing perfume, he goes into a coughing fit and grabs tissues to wipe his tearing eyes ( even if it's just Annick Goutal's Eau du Sud which is the gentlest of scents). This time..... well, let's just say it wasn't  the tissue he grabbed.
Furthermore, Hugo, the Havaianas hound , insisted on sitting on my lap all morning. The grumpy lady at our favorite Chinese restaurant even grabbed my arm to sit me down and was all smiles. I  think I was this close to getting a free egg tart even! The delivery boy was actually "sniffing" the air but due to the language barrier, I couldn't ask him what he thought. But Wow!  If the purpose of a perfume is to attract, seduce, subjugate... then, this stuff really works! I have never had that type of reaction to any perfume I ever wore!!
Now it's not cheap, and I'm going to have to repurpose one of those mason jars I'm recycling into a piggybank so I can save up for a whole bottle but ... like The Emperor's New Clothes, I am parading this scent through town, baby!

Things I do in my Havaianas...

It's a deliciously rainy day here in Singapore. Tropical rain is so yummy when it's a Saturday and you have nowhere to go.......

I was inspired to take out my Silver Dollar Pancake Pan from Crate and Barrel and make a rainy day breakfast- chocolate chip pancakes for mini-sassy and pear pancakes for J.

You may think I'm just being all "Martha" today but actually no..... I have ulterior motives, my friends.

I am using food to seduce J. You see, J does not share the warm fuzzy feelings I have when it comes to luxury leather bags......and I have just fallen deeply in love with a Vuitton bag that's been discontinued ( therefore rare and makes me want it all the more!).

They may just look like innocuous, innocent mini-pancakes to him but they are 0h-so-much more than that..... They are the golden ticket to a vintage Vuitton Nomade Speedy;)

Things I do in my Havaianas

Yesterday, J, mini-sassy and I decided to make pizza from scratch in our Havaianas. After years of research, the best crust we've ever made is from the Chez Panisse Cookbook. Here is the recipe:

Chez Panisse Pizza
(From Chez Panisse Pasta, Pizza, & Calzone, 1984.)

Make a sponge by mixing together:
1/4 cup lukewarm water (important that it is not hot or the yeast will be killed)
2 tsp. active dry yeast
1/4 cup rye flour (if you live in Singapore, Cold Storage carries this)

Let it rise 20 to 30 minutes, then add:

1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 tbsp. milk
2 tbsp. olive oil
1/2 tsp salt
1 3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

Mix the dough with a wooden spoon, then knead on a floured board. It will be soft and a little sticky. Use quick light motions with your hands so the dough won’t stick. Add more flour to the board as you knead, but no more than is absolutely necessary. A soft moist dough makes a light and very crispy crust. Knead for 10 to 15 minutes to develop strength and elasticity in the dough. Put it in a bowl rubbed with olive oil, and oil the surface of the dough to prevent a crust from forming. Cover the bowl with a towel and put it in a warm place, approximately 90F to 110F. An oven heated just by its pilot light is a good spot. Let the dough rise to double its size, for about 2 hours, then punch it down. Let it rise about 40 minutes more, then shape and bake it. This recipe makes one 12-14 inch pizza, or several small ones.(* Supposedly, you can make the dough up to 2 days ahead).

Preheat the oven to 450 or 500 degrees F with a baking stone or unglazed ceramic tiles in the oven. If you don't have a wooden paddle, use the back of a baking sheet to put the pizza into the oven. (* If you are cooking directly on a pizza pan, the stones are not necessary)

Flatten the dough on a heavily floured board. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough to roughly 12 to 14 inches in diameter. ( Mini-sassy knows how to " throw" the pizza in the air but I don't , so I don't bother) The dough should be 1/8-1/4 inch thick.(* Our pizzas are not perfect circles, but it makes it look more rustic) Transfer the dough to a paddle or baking sheet, also heavily floured. Have your toppings ready, at room temperature, and work quickly putting them on the pizza. After a minute or so it will begin to stick, and will be impossible to slide off the paddle. Give the paddle a few shakes back and forth to make sure the dough is loose. Slide the pizza from the paddle onto the hot stone with an abrupt jerking motion of your wrist. This takes a certain knack but comes easily after a few tries ( we just put ours directly on to a pizza pan). The pizza will be browned and cooked in 12 to 14 minutes(sometimes less, depending on your oven, so you need to visually check it every 3 minutes)

Favorite toppings:
1. Onion Confit, walnuts, mozzarella and Gorgonzola- The trick to caramelized onions(I learned this from a course I did in Cordon Bleu many years ago) is this: Slice Red onions. In a pan, put some butter and olive oil. Saute the onions in medium heat until semi-opaque. Cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the pan. "Crumple" the parchment paper under running water, so it gets wet (but not soaking). Put the wet crumpled parchment over the onions, make sure all the onions are completely covered and reduce heat. Cook until the onions are soft, brown and caramelized. Assemble on Pizza and drizzle with truffle oil. YUMMY!

2. To make a pizza margherita like the picture above: Tomato sauce, Buffalo Mozzarella cut in rounds and fresh Basil.

Enjoy!

sassy
